Pasko na, sinta ko… It is indeed Christmastime again.

Having earned the distinction of celebrating the world’s longest Christmas season, Filipinos look forward to this time of year, all year long. As early as September (the start of the “ber” months), one can already spot Christmas decorations being put up in households across the country and they typically do not come down until the first Sunday in January, known as Three Kings Day, or even after that.

For Filipinos, Christmas is about togetherness. It is less material and more religious and family-oriented than in other parts of the world. It has never been that much of a commercial extravaganza as a time to practice the simple holiday traditions that are deeply rooted in the Catholic faith-from the ritual Simbang Gabi, when devoted churchgoers flock to early-morning mass for nine consecutive days, to the merry Noche Buena, which bring families together around the Christmas table to partake in traditional Filipino delicacies like queso de bola and jamon.

While most Filipino Christmas songs generally reflect the joyful spirit of this most beloved holiday, there are those that sing of the loneliness of the season, especially for those whose loved ones are far away.

With over seven million Filipino workers abroad, only a small, lucky few from that number will be able to fly home to spend Christmas with their families.  It can be a difficult time of year, but there are ways to cope and have yourself a merry little Christmas, even outside the Philippines. If you are one of those people who can’t take time off work or can’t afford to travel all the way back to the motherland this year, don’t let the holiday blues get you down. Here are a few ways to get you back in the swing of season:

1. Choose to be happy.

Not being with the people you love during the holidays is difficult. It is natural to feel a little sad and homesick this time of year. The first step is to accept this and acknowledge your feelings. But there’s no point in spending time feeling sorry for yourself. Make the effort to be happy! Don’t let the image of what a holiday “should be” dictate your feelings. Take this opportunity to start some of your own traditions in whichever part of the world you are.

2. Surround yourself with friends.

A surefire way to fight depression (at any time of the year) is to spend time with friends. This is a great time to reconnect with people. Though you are not physically at home, you are not alone. Don’t be shy about telling friends you might be feeling the holiday blues! People are very open with invitations this time of year. Make frequent plans with friends to do some fun holiday activities – go see a Christmas concert, visit a Christmas bazaar or go ice skating.

3. Get in the holiday spirit.

Why block out the festivities? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Take yourself shopping for a new outfit to wear to a party or prepare a familiar treat like turon or leche flan to share with friends. Decorating your home is another way to feel the Christmas spirit. Put up your own little tree, hang some mistletoe, string some Christmas lights on your window and throw a fabulous fete.

4. Do some volunteer work.

One way to get your mind off yourself and your problems is to do something for someone else. Rekindle your Christmas spirit by spending time with those who are less fortunate. Many organizations need extra help around the holidays. Help prepare meals at a homeless shelter, visit with residents at a hursing home or get involved with your church’s holiday activities. Sites like volunteermatch.org or servenet.org allow you to find charities in your neighborhood that need holiday volunteers by simply entering your zip code Giving your time to someone who will really cherish it is the best gift of all. Isn’t that what Christmas is about anyway?

5. Call home.

In this day and age, there are many ways to communicate with your loved ones across the world. Purchase a webcam or a Magic Jack or log on to Skype to talk for free.  Let your family know that you are thinking of them. Sometimes all it takes is familiar voice to remind you that even though it may feel like it, you’re not really alone. There are many people who love you and are missing you, more than you may know.
