Anyone interested in the idea of doing something a little different for a late 2010 holiday – or, indeed, anyone for whom bird watching and wildlife holidays are already a passion – could end their 2010 with an impeccably guided birding tour to some of the most populous bird centres in the world. Whether people are looking for some real winter wonderland action, with a birding holiday to Iceland, or something more exotic (fancy a last minute dash for some Caribbean sun) there’s plenty to go around as late availability tours spring up from wildlife tour operators in the UK.

2010 has been a rollercoaster ride of a year for most British people – so it’s nice to get away at the end of it all for a breather, doing something you really love to do. Bird watching and wildlife holidays offer a doubly attractive escape: first, because they take the holiday maker to some of the most beautiful places on earth; and second, because winter holidays are usually less fully subscribed than summer ones, which mean fewer non-local people milling around in whatever spot you choose to explore.

Wildlife and birding holidays offer something completely different from your run of the mill break. Wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers and amateur naturalists will of course already be familiar with the wonderful experiences that can be had on bird watching or wildlife holidays – but there’s plenty for first timers or intrigued new recruits too. Why spend two weeks getting fat by a pool in a Caribbean resort, when you could be trekking through some of the most astonishing scenery in the world, to be rewarded by a glimpse of a rare creature in its natural habitat?

There are bonuses for the locals, too. Wildlife and birding holidays make extensive use of local guides and knowledge – bringing money into the pockets of the people who actually live in an area, rather than (as is unfortunately often the case with resort based holidays) Government subsidised coffers. When you take bird watching and wildlife holidays run by a responsible tour operator, you can be sure that the money you spend on one of the best experiences of your life will be used to maintain and support the infrastructure of the villages and towns surrounding the wilderness areas you visit.

Wildlife and birding tours, then, are superbly exciting, completely unique and ethically sound. They also offer an environmental incentive – the money you pay to go on one is also ploughed back into projects designed to preserve the wild areas you are enjoying so much. So why not think about a different kind of break as 2010 draws to a close. Research reveals over half of UK holidaymakers would opt to holiday alone

According to research carried out by Leger Holidays, half of UK holidaymakers surveyed would to go on holiday alone, regardless of their relationship status. Post Office Travel Insurance recommends that all UK holidaymakers, whether travelling alone or in a group, make sure their trip is covered by a travel insurance policy.

The research also found that individual travellers opt for short-haul holidays, with 34 per cent staying in the UK and 42 per cent venturing to Europe. Regardless of how far a solo holidaymaker decides to travel, Post Office Travel Insurance reminds travellers it is essential to purchase a fully comprehensive travel insurance policy for cancellations, loss, theft or accidents.

Despite the research stating that UK holidaymakers are increasingly travelling alone it seems there’s a limit to how long they would like to spend travelling alone – 66 per cent of those who would travel alone would only do so for seven days or less. Travel insurance should be considered an essential holiday requirement for all travellers, even for short breaks. Post Office Travel Insurance reminds holidaymakers a single-trip travel insurance policy can provide in the case of delays or cancellations as well as sickness.Female travellers were most cautious of holidaying alone, due to concerns about security and safety, according to data collected by the research. As well as taking safety precautions while holidaying solo, women holidaying alone may feel reassured by investing in travel insurance to help towards costs if unfortunate and unforeseen events occur.

Post Office Head of Travel Insurance Rachel Croft said: “Adequate travel insurance is crucial. If you’re not properly covered by a travel insurance policy and have a serious accident then you or your family could be left to pick up a colossal bill.”

A twitcher (a pro slang for the amateur bird watching enthusiast) never misses an opportunity to get a few more bird sightings under his or her belt. So when holiday time comes around, it seems foolish for him or her not to take advantage of the well earned break to get a bit more serious. There are adventure sports holidays in this modern world; there are night clubbing holidays; there are ski-ing holidays; snowboarding holidays; even walking holidays (as if people didn’t do enough walking as it is). Well, for the amateur bird spotter, there are also bird watching holidays: and they offer a chance to visit some of the most incredible places on earth, in the company of fellow enthusiasts.

The best birding holidays are led by experts, usually experts placed by residency or long experience in the country of destination. An expert will provide hassle-free guidance to all the best birding spots in an area, often enabling holidaying bird watchers to catch glimpses of birds they would never have found on their own – and in situations they could only have dreamed about, were to try and conduct their own bird watching trip. Take the excellent Limosa as an example – a birding holiday company run out of the UK, whose tentacles reach as far as Southeast Asia, as low as the Serengeti and as high as the Canadian Rockies. There are, for example, species of bird so shy that even casual locals have never seen them. The guides employed by companies like Limosa, on the other hand, spend their lives with and around these species: they know what to look for, when to look for it and how to approach the bird once it has been identified.

Even non bird watchers get a kick out of these holidays. They’re different, for one thing – there’s a point to them, a thing to find and watch, which is where a lot of other holidays can fall down a little. Going on a bird watching holiday implies giving oneself a purpose, while one is on vacation – and that negates the twin possibilities of boredom or not knowing what to do. Then, of course, there’s the locations themselves – which, covering the kinds of places birds go rather than people, are uniformly stunning. Anyone looking to embark on a holiday that offers a bit more than catered meals and a resort swimming pool could do a lot worse than trying out a little part time twitching.
