Head off to the Canary Islands this summer and enjoy a great value break on the island of Lanzarote. Where the sun shines all year round and rainfall is rare.

The Canary Islands are a popular and well known holiday destination – especially the larger links in the chain such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria.  And collectively the archipelago welcomes around ten million tourists every year.  Making this the second most visited region in Spain after Cataluña.  Which boasts major tourist draws such as Barcelona, Girona and the Costa Brava.

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the islands and is a lot less verdant than the rest.  As there is very little in the way of rainfall there whilst the terrain is very dry thanks to the impact of volcanic eruptions some 250 years ago.

Getting to Lanzarote is easy as the journey time is just four hours from the UK.

With cheap flights to Lanzarote available from all of the major budget airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair.  With all flights landing at the only airport on the island located just outsider the capital city of Arrecife.

Until recently the easiest way to enjoy a holiday on the island was to book a break with one of the leading tour operators.  As there was little scope for the independent traveller to book their own vacations.  The internet has changed all that though.  And now tourists can build their own holidays in Lanzarote direct online.

This has also given rise to an increase in the quantity of privately owned accommodation for rent.  With an abundance of apartments and holiday villas in Lanzarote now available for visitors to select from.

Once on the island tourists soon find that there’s loads to do.  Lanzarote boasts plenty of picturesque beaches – close to one hundred in fact.  With Papagayo in the south and Famara in the north widely regarded as the best.  Whilst there are also plenty of atmospheric towns and villages to explore.  Such as Haria which is located in the Valley of 1000 Palms and the former island capital of Teguise, home to a fine collection of colonial buildings.

The real star attraction though are the Montana’s del Fuego or Fire Mountains.  Which are located within the Timanfaya National Park and which were created by huge eruptions in the 18th century.  These caused enormous devastation at the time but ironically today have become the most popular visitor attraction on the island.
